Synopsis:

Evelyn Maltravers understands exactly how little she’s worth on the marriage mart. As an incurable bluestocking from a family tumbling swiftly toward ruin, she knows she’ll never make a match in a ballroom. Her only hope is to distinguish herself by making the biggest splash in the one sphere she excels: on horseback. In haute couture. But to truly capture London’s attention she’ll need a habit-maker who’s not afraid to take risks with his designs—and with his heart.

Half-Indian tailor Ahmad Malik has always had a talent for making women beautiful, inching his way toward recognition by designing riding habits for Rotten Row’s infamous Pretty Horsebreakers—but no one compares to Evelyn. Her unbridled spirit enchants him, awakening a depth of feeling he never thought possible.

But pushing boundaries comes at a cost and not everyone is pleased to welcome Evelyn and Ahmad into fashionable society. With obstacles spanning between them, the indomitable pair must decide which hurdles they can jump and what matters most: making their mark or following their hearts?

Have you been looking for that 2022 romance novel that brings the love excitement that is part Victorian and part “Bridgerton”? Bestselling novelist Mimi Matthews again brings the romance and magic that she always lovely depicts in her novels. And this latest one, The Siren of Sussex, is another winner and an excellent selection for the cozy winter nights.

Evelyn Maltravers may not be marriage material by Victorian-era standards, but that doesn’t stop her from trying to make a name for herself by entering horseback riding. But being called a “bluestocking” prevents her from getting a legitimate habit-maker and taking the chance to create a design that will really wow London society…that is until she meets Ahmad Malik.

Ahmad Malik’s designs have the incredible talent of making any woman feel beautiful. His brilliant designs give him a closer chance of being a tailor for social recognition. But his Indian heritage and the prejudices he faces because of it does not help matters. But his chance encounter with Evelyn Maltravers stirs a passion in himself that he believed was long gone. Evelyn and Ahmad face obstacles when trying to enter fashionable London society. Still, as they move up the ranks together, they begin to decide what matters the most: making their mark or following their hearts?

I always enjoy reading Mimi Matthews books. Her female protagonists are fierce, her secondary characters relatable, the setting is so well-researched. However, her books also make readers fans of the historical fiction genre feel like they are reading a classic from one of the greats. Matthews doesn’t leave anything out when she creates this atmospheric setting. As you read, you see the thorough and well-research she put into her stories, and this one is no different.
As I snuggled into my favorite reading chair and my hot cup of tea, I escaped into the Victorian era. I enjoyed the company of Evelyn and Ahmad for a couple of hours. You can’t help but immerse yourself in this moving love story. Evelyn and Ahmad’s trials become your trials; their joys become your joys. And, always the case with a good book, when the story ends, you are saddened when your friends have left.

Perfect read for the long winter nights and the upcoming summer, The Siren of Sussex is another winner by Mimi Matthews. From beginning to end, you can help but fall in love in the world that Matthews has created. Don’t miss you chance by not picking up this worthy read. You won’t be disappointed!

I was born and raised in New York. I still live in New York but kind of sick of the city and one day I wish to move to the UK.I have a Masters degree in Library Science and I currently work in a special collections library. I loved books ever since I was a little girl. Through the hard times in my life, my love for books has always gotten me through. Just entering another world different from my own intrigues me. As long as I am entering in another universe, I like to create my own as well. I love to write and hopefully I will be able to complete a novel.
