Today is my stop on the Colored Pages Book Tour, and I’m looking forward to talking about Huda F Wants To Know? by National Book Award Finalist author, Huda Fahmy.
I have been a fan of Huda Fahmy’s books for a while now. I absolutely loved her two adult graphic novels: Yes, I’m Hot in This: The Hilarious Truth about Life in a Hijab and That Can Be Arranged: A Muslim Love Story. The way that Fahmy was able to tell a humorous stories to dismantle stereotypes but also relatable and honest stories always appealed to me and left with me wanting more as soon as I close the book. That’s why I was thrilled when Fahmy started writing a series of young adult graphic novels that are semi-autobiographical, Huda F Are You? and Huda F Cares?, both hilarious and cheeky books that not just gives me a brief insight into what a Muslim American teenager but it gave me a funny but empathic coming of age story as I embark on the journey of Huda growing up through her high school years. That’s why I am excited to talk about her latest installment in the series, Huda F Wants To Know?
Huda is ready to kick her junior year into high gear. Volunteer, ace her ACTs, pass her AP classes, write a kick ass scholarship essay, all things are going according to plan. That is until Huda’s parents announce they are getting a divorce. And it feels like everything is spinning out of her control. How or where does she go from here? Huda F wants to know. Fahmy always brings her A game when she creates and writes her graphic novel but with this latest installment, Huda f Wants To Know? Brings the humor but does a wonderful job talking about mental health, particularly in people of color. You could feel the frustration and fear that Huda is feeling and that type of emotion makes it just jump off the page. By tapping into her own personal experiences, Fahmy perfectly depicts a teenager going through drastic change and coping with those changes. I identified with Huda F in the previous books but this one by far is the most poignant and relatable story that I feel a lot of teen readers will dive right into. You should read the previous two books but it’s not necessary to read them in order. But it is a great start to begin with as you read Huda’s journey of growing up and her funny antics.
