Today is my stop on the Colored Pages Book Tour, and I am thrilled to talk about a YA book that will breeze by the summer evenings with entertainment, Black Girls Don’t Cry by Alex Travis. The new school year is approaching, but teen readers might hesitate to go back after reading this engrossing, fast-paced YA thriller that is like “Carrie” but with social themes interwoven in the story. I feel that readers will enjoy this YA thriller since it reads like the TV high school dramas or slasher movies from the early 2000s. For someone who grew up in that era, it was nice not only to reminisce but also to be captivated by a fast-paced story that holds your attention from beginning to end. I also enjoyed how Ida had a supportive family base, which was refreshing to read when there are queer characters depicted.
A fast-paced, captivating YA mystery that is ideal for teen readers who enjoy horror/slasher films but want some thought-provoking lessons tied in with their reading. For parents who are aiming to get their teens into reading and are looking for reads that match their age and grade level, I recommend this as a great book that gives them not only a break from the required summer work but also necessary summer entertainment.
