When I was in high school, I knew that my major in college would be English. I have been reading all my life, why not major in it? So that is what I did. I first went to Canisius College in Buffalo, NY but due to the high costs of tuition, I transferred back to the city to Hunter College. Hunter is part of the CUNY (City University of New York) system. I majored in English Language and Literature and minor in History (at the time CUNY required students to have a minor).
I graduated in 2009, in the middle of the economic crisis. I was constantly discouraged about my job prospects, or lack there of. I wanted to write with my degree and strive for a job in book publishing. I was jumping from one internship to another but nothing was sticking. Then, a family member suggested that since I had a passion for books, why not go for a master’s degree in library science? I didn’t even know that you needed a degree to become a librarian. But as I was doing research on it, I knew this was the perfect profession for me.

So, I attended Long Island University and received my Masters in Library Science in January 2014 and haven’t look back since. Who knows if I would have been satisfied if I did get a job in publishing? But I do know all I wanted to do was help people and share my passion for books and library science gave me that opportunity. I may be having problems with my current job position, but I know going for my library degree was the best thing to happen to me.
This is Day 22 of the 30 Day Writing Challenge.
