While most are creating their New Years resolutions, we book lovers are creating are yearly reading challenge. Reading should never be treated as a competitive sport, but as pleasurable activity that enhances our daily lives.

But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t challenge ourselves, to diversify our bookshelves. But don’t fret! I have created a reading challenge for 2018, to give us a chance to explore new reads: 52 Books for 52 weeks. With these great suggestions, I challenge YOU to read bolder, bigger and more this new year.

Below you will find a PDF printout of the challenge so you can check off which categories you successfully completed this year. If you want more accountability or a better way to track your reading progress, add a social element to your reading by using social media accounts like Pinterest, Instagram, of course, Goodreads.

Here are the categories:

  • A classic book you’ve meant to read
  • A book by your favorite author
  • A book recommended by a librarian or a bookseller
  • a memoir
  • a biography on someone who is still living
  • a biography on someone who has passed away
  • a book by an author who is of different race, ethnicity, religion than your own
  • a book than can be finished in a day
  • a book that has 500 or more pages
  • a graphic novel that is not published by Marvel or DC Comics
  • a book that was banned
  • a book full of poetry, plays, or essays
  • a book that recently been nominated or won an award
  • Read a book from a genre you never read from before
  • a book with an ugly cover
  • a book that was translated
  • Colonial/Post-colonial literature
  • True crime book
  • a book published in the year you were born
  • a book from an independent publisher
  • a book told through letters
  • a book inspired by a true story
  • a book on feminism
  • a book set in a country you’d like to visit
  • a book from an author you have never read before
  • a book you wanted to read last year
  • a history book
  • a book published in 2018
  • a book you were always too scared to read
  • a narrative nonfiction
  • a book published in the last 3 years and you’ve never read that author before
  • a ghost story
  • a mystery from an author you’ve never read before
  • a book that made the bestseller lists recently (e.g. The New York Times)
  • a book that was recently put on your TBR list (let’s say the first 20)
  • a book that was recommended to you by a friend
  • a trilogy or series
  • a book that is part of “book hype”
  • a young adult novel
  • a literary fiction
  • a short story
  • an alternate history/dystopia novel
  • First person narrative
  • a book recently or is going to be turned into a movie
  • a self-published book
  • a book set in your hometown/region
  • a book by a male author
  • a book by a female author
  • a nonfiction book about a topic you are passionate about
  • a book with a name in the title
  • a book you read when you were a kid
  • read an e-book
  • Any book from the 2017 Goodreads Choice Awards
