The shortlist for the Golden Man Booker Prize has just been announced.
In honor of the Man Booker Prize turning 50 this year, the organization has decided to have a special one-off award that crowns the best work of fiction from the past five decades of the prize. Out of all the books that have won the prize, five were chosen by five judges who either served on the panel in the past or currently on it right now. The public will then choose which book should win the Golden Man Booker Prize.
The five chosen judges are assigned a decade, pick the best Man Booker Prize winner from that said decade and make a case for why that book should win. The voting is open until June 25 and the winner will be announced on July 8.
Here are the nominees:
- In a Free State by V.S. Naipaul, chosen by Robert McCrum from 1970s
- Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively, chosen by Lemn Sissay from the 1980s
- The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje, chosen by Kamila Shamsie from the 1990s
- Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, chosen by Simon Mayo from the 2000s
- Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders, chosen by Hollie McNish from the 2010s
