What I’ve Been Reading Lately: April 15

Welcome to What I’veBeen Reading Lately, a feature where I’ll be giving short reviews of what I’m currently reading:

I got this idea from Anne Bogel’s website, Modern Mrs. DarcySo I thought I would try it out here! Right now, I’ll thinking of  doing it once a month on a Wednesday. But since I cannot be at my workplace right now, I’ll be posting what books I am reading right now.

Since this month is National Poetry Month, I thought I would start reading some novels that were written in verse. So I thought I would start with Elizabeth Acevedo’s nest lastest book, Clap When You Land. Camino and Yahaira’s lives drastically change when their father has died in a plane crash. Two young girls have to face a reality where the father they share is gone and their lives are completely altered.

I didn’t enjoy her last book, With the Fire on High, that much. However, I thought I would give Acevedo another try with her newest one. However, I am finding this story a bit boring and having a hard time keeping my interest in it. But I am stubborn, so I’m going to keep trying.

The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta

Another novel in verse, Atta tells the story of Michael, a mixed race gay teen growing up in London. Growing up and coming out is just the start of learning who he is and where he fits in. He starts to find a place where he trul belongs-the Drag Society-as the Black Flamingo.

I was excited to read this when I heard about the big splash it made in the UK and I was so happy it was coming to the US. I can see why it was shortlisted for a YA Book Prize and I’m already loving this! If you are a librarian/blogger, I advise you to request this arc. You will not be disappointed.

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

As I mentioned in a previous post, I am enjoying reading the imaginative Anne. Although the arrival of Anne Shirley to Green Gables was a complete surprise to the Cuthberts, her unique personality and enormous imagination will lead her to many adventures at Green Gables.
