Friday Debate: Holidays in Public Libraries

Friday Deabte

Welcome to Friday Debate, a feature on cup of tea with that book, please, where every Friday a question will be posted that tantalize the brain and expands our horizons. For this week’s question:

Most people are decorating for the holiday season. Whether it’s in retail stores or in people’s homes, this is the time people celebrate the season. So it should not come as a surprise that public libraries get in on the holiday spirit.

However, that appears to be changing. To make sure that their library appears inclusive to all cultures, there are some public libraries that putting up holiday book displays, like the one above, decorating the library, such as putting up a Christmas tree, or conducting holiday programming. For example, my library stated that are celebrating “winter”, not the holidays.

I completely agree that any decorations put on display in a public space should celebrate all cultures but to not have any of the holidays in the libraries? I just think that you are not meeting your community’s needs. Public libraries represent all different cultures and book displays and programming reflect all that. Not incorporating them in the library might have a negative effect.

Since you are the public and it affects you, I am asking this question for this week’s Friday Debate,

Please post any comments you have in the section below.

I was born and raised in New York. I still live in New York but kind of sick of the city and one day I wish to move to the UK.I have a Masters degree in Library Science and I currently work in a special collections library. I loved books ever since I was a little girl. Through the hard times in my life, my love for books has always gotten me through. Just entering another world different from my own intrigues me. As long as I am entering in another universe, I like to create my own as well. I love to write and hopefully I will be able to complete a novel.

  1. My library doesn’t have December holiday stuff, but it always does Halloween decor and an hour for trick or treating. I think it’s because they’re closed on other holidays.
