My Top Picks for The Great American Read

I have been talking about The Great American Read here on cup of tea with that book, please, ever since its launch. I have encouraged all of you to vote everyday and watch the amazing TV episodes that have aired. But now as voting ends tonight and the grand finale airs in a couple of days, I realized I never told you what my picks are. There were just so many great books to choose from but I think I managed to narrow it down to at least 10:

pride-and-prejudice

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Top number choice! This amazing book has to be America’s favorite book. This witty and enjoyable has touched my heart the first time I read it and it has continued to move me ever since.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

I consider this to be my second favorite book of all time after Pride and Prejudice. I felt a real connection with Jane’s independent spirit. When I read it for a fourth time, it really opened my eyes at how I was living my life and gave me a whole new outlook. There are not that many books that do that.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

I read this for the first time this year and I just absolutely loved it! This novel really tugs at the heartstrings and exemplifies the true feeling of family love.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

I am currently reading this right now, the first time in over ten years, and I forgot how powerfully thought-provoking this novel was! It is more than a horror novel. It speaks to the danger of hubris and the importance of human nature.

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

I was surprised that this made The Great American Read list but I am so glad it did! This is by far the best mystery I have ever read! I credit this book in getting me to reading mystery novels again!

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier

Another fantastic read that I read this past year! I could not put this book down! Now I want to read other Du Maurier’s works.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

A timeless classic. Truly a book that stands a test of time. This was a perfect novel for a 14-year-old teenager to read who was about to start high school and really was unsure at the road that lies ahead of her.

Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White

I loved this book when I was a little girl! Just thinking about this book brings back so many childhood memories. This book illustrates the true meaning of friendship and the fear of accepting change. It really spoke to what it means to be a child.

Harry Potter (Series) by J.K. Rowling

I may not be that crazy about the books but I do believe that this is one of the best written children’s stories I have ever read. This was definitely one of the few book series that got everyone reading again.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

Another surprise pick that made the list. This book makes entirely no sense. That’s what makes it so great and memorable.

And what will be number one?

Although Pride and Prejudice is currently in the top ten and would definitely be my number one pick, I think I have to give this one to To Kill a Mockingbird. It’s a book that not only speaks to a lot of people but defines America. It is a great choice because I think it is a book we all need to read right now, more than ever.

What would be your number one choice?

I was born and raised in New York. I still live in New York but kind of sick of the city and one day I wish to move to the UK.I have a Masters degree in Library Science and I currently work in a special collections library. I loved books ever since I was a little girl. Through the hard times in my life, my love for books has always gotten me through. Just entering another world different from my own intrigues me. As long as I am entering in another universe, I like to create my own as well. I love to write and hopefully I will be able to complete a novel.
