Friday Debate: Fiction vs. Nonfiction

Friday Deabte

Welcome to Friday Debate, a feature on cup of tea with that book, please, where every Friday a question will be posted that tantalize the brain and expands our horizons. For this week’s question:

My book club finished reading a nonfiction book, Quiet: The Power of the Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain, and we picked another nonfiction book to read, Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot.

I love reading nonfiction books but some of my fellow book lovers in the club do not necessarily enjoy reading nonfiction, however, they wanted to expand their reading habits and give nonfiction another try. Fiction will always be the first choice. It allows you to break away from the real world and take that rare opportunity to jump into another one, even if it is an imaginary one. But nonfiction can provide wonderful opportunities as well. You get to learn so much about various subjects, including the topics that you are passionate about. Nonfiction books gives more background information that can be seriously lacking in fiction books.

This is ongoing battle between the genres leads me to ask these two question for this week’s debate:

I was born and raised in New York. I still live in New York but kind of sick of the city and one day I wish to move to the UK.I have a Masters degree in Library Science and I currently work in a special collections library. I loved books ever since I was a little girl. Through the hard times in my life, my love for books has always gotten me through. Just entering another world different from my own intrigues me. As long as I am entering in another universe, I like to create my own as well. I love to write and hopefully I will be able to complete a novel.

  1. I generally prefer fiction, but I like nonfiction too if it’s by a writer I like or about a subject or topic that interests me.
