Friday Debate: Hurricane Maria and Puerto Rico

Friday Deabte

Welcome to Friday Debate, a feature on cup of tea with that book, please, where every Friday a question will be posted that tantalize the brain and expands our horizons. For this week’s question:

Hurricane MariaIt was announced this week that Hurricane Maria may have been the deadliest hurricane on US soil in the past 100 years. A study published by the New England Journal of Medicine, 4,600 may have died in the aftermath of the storm. Delayed medical care may have been the main factor. The official government toll is still 64.

Did you hear this news? You possibly didn’t get a chance because the media was focused on ABC canceling the TV show Roseanne, due to racist tweet by the Roseanne Barr. Media outlets were more concerned about the cancelling of a TV show than an U.S. island (a fact that people tend to forget) still suffering through the effects of a natural disaster. I can’t speak for most, I know that I don’t want to hear about Roseanne and a TV show. I want to hear about Puerto Rico, an island that we clearly forgot existed. The US government has clearly forgotten about them and sadly, so has the media.

So for this week’s debate, I wanted to ask you this question:

Victims of Hurricane Maria still need help. Here are some links where you can find out how to contribute:

ConPRmetidos

The Hurricane Maria Community Relief & Recovery Fund

Oxfam

The Salvation Army

American Red Cross

I was born and raised in New York. I still live in New York but kind of sick of the city and one day I wish to move to the UK.I have a Masters degree in Library Science and I currently work in a special collections library. I loved books ever since I was a little girl. Through the hard times in my life, my love for books has always gotten me through. Just entering another world different from my own intrigues me. As long as I am entering in another universe, I like to create my own as well. I love to write and hopefully I will be able to complete a novel.

  1. I live in Savannah, Ga., where a national Guard plane from Puerto Rico recently crashed. It was insane the number of people who didn’t understand they were Americans.

      1. Thanks for the link. I’m so sorry the passengers were escaping a terrible situation in Puerto Rico for only things to end so tragically. 🙁

  2. Very important topic! Needs more awareness. I was in Puerto Rico last week, and got to see some of the effects myself. I wrote about it on my blog – hoping to raise more awareness. Feel free to give me feedback, thanks!
