The shortlist for the 2018 Women’s Prize for Fiction has been released today. The 2018 shortlist favors new writers over authors who have already made a name for themselves.
Sarah Sands, one of this year’s judges, made a statement about this recent announcement:
The shortlist was chosen without fear or favour. We lost some big names, with regret, but narrowed down the list to the books which spoke most directly and truthfully to the judges…The themes of the shortlist have both contemporary and lasting resonance encompassing the birth of the internet, race, sexual violence, grief, oh and mermaids. Some of the authors are young, half by Brits and all are blazingly good and brave writers.”
The Women’s Prize for Fiction, previously known as the Bailey’s Prize for Fiction until 2016 and the Orange Prize for Fiction between 1996 and 2012, is considered to be one of the most prestiogious literary awards. It celebrates originality, excellence and availability in women’s writing throughout the world. The winner will receive a check for £30,000 and a bronze medal. The winner will be announced on June 6.
