Female writers dominate the newly announced shortlist of the 2018 Swansea International Dylan Thomas Prize.
From a longlist of 12 authors and poets, the six books were the lucky few to make it to the next round. Out of those six, four are both women and debut authors. Swansea University highly praised the list for its reflection of the “political zeitgeist of today” and portraying realistic themes in their works:
2017 sparked this century’s biggest gender equality movement, and this year’s female-led international shortlist brings to the fore crucial themes of sexual violence, toxic relationships, masculinity and racial divisions, that are relevant across the world, not just the UK. Just as Dylan Thomas’ universal poetry captured the grief and loss of innocence in post-war Britain, the prize showcases the breadth and diversity of literature that captures the political zeitgeist of today.”
The Swansea University International Dylan Thomas Prize, which is in its 10th year, celebrates the brightest, young writers of the world . The world’s largest literary prize (worth £30,000) awards young writers, under the age of 39, open to all writers of all nations, but must be written in English.
The winners will be announced May 10.

Kumukanda by Kayombo Chingonyi

First Love by Gwendoline Riley
From “one of Britain’s most original young writers” (The Observer), a blistering account of a marriage in crisis and a portrait of a woman caught between withdrawal and self-assertion, depression and rage.
