Favorite Agatha Christie Mysteries

A Haunting in Venice is released in US theaters today. Before rushing to your local bookstore and library looking for a Christie’s novel with this title, this movie is based on Christie’s classic, Hallowe’en Party. I didn’t enjoy last year’s adaptation, Death On The Nile, and most likely will not be seeing this one, but a few lousy film adaptations don’t stop me from enjoying Christie’s work.

I’ve been reading Agatha Christie for awhile and I am discovering what a wonderful and amazing writer she is. She is the master at misdirection and providing surprising twists. No wonder she is called “The Queen of Mystery”.

So, in honor of the movie’s release (and if you are going to see it, no judgment here), here is a list of my favorite Christie novels or short stories (so far). New to Christie? Pick one of these, and you’ll fall in love with her books as well.

• A Murder Is Announced – What happens when you find a murder announced in a newspaper? Don’t worry. Miss Marple is on the case!
• 4:50 from Paddington – Probably my least favorite Miss Marple story but still enjoyable. Really focuses on how are our eyes can deceive us.
• The Body in the Library  – I feel Miss Marple is at her best in this one. The twists and turns are at its highest.
• The Moving Finger – Although Miss Marple didn’t appear towards the end of the book, the change of narrator showed me of how great Chrisite is at storytelling.
• They Do It With Mirrors – Full of red herrings. It really proved to me that she was master of them.

• The Witness for the Prosecution – A short story but still contained all the twists and thrills that goes with a full length novel.
• The Murder at the Vicarage – The first ever Miss Marple story I ever read.
• Murder on the Orient Express – Still one of my favorite stories! I didn’t see the ending coming.
• And Then There Were None – I can’t rave enough about this book! If you want to start reading Christie, this book is a definite start. I loved every moment of this surprisingly twisty novel.
•  Crooked House – Another great Christie classic! I was totally blown away by the ending!

• Ordeal by Innocence – It kept me on my toes! It definitely had me guessing from left to right who the murderer was. Another great Christie read!
• Death on the Nile – Such an exciting mystery! From beginning to end it had me hooked from beginning to end. So much plot-driven compared to the other popular Poirot mystery “Murder on the Orient Express”. Although I had inking about the culprit, really didn’t expect the ending to turn out the way it did.
• The ABC Murders – When Alice Asher is murdered in Andover, Hercule Poirot is already looking into the clues. Alphabetically speaking, it’s one letter down, twenty-five to go.
• The Mirror Crack’d From Side to Side – Miss Marple may be getting older but her mind and her wit is sharp as a tack and this, yet again, is another mystery where Miss Marple’s expertise is clearly shown. But this is also another mystery classic where Christie’s ingenuity and genius is shown in crafting a mystery that will have any lover of the genre guessing until the very end.
• Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? – How one simple question from a dying man can lead to a twisty and adventurous mystery that is exciting from beginning to end.
